description: Want to try solo travel but not sure where to go? Explore Traverse City, Michigan, the Cherry Capital of the World. You don't even have to like cherries to enjoy all that the city has to offer. This past weekend I decided to take a last minute trip to clear my mind of some things and reset (I will try to go deeper on this in another post). I chose Traverse City for the following reasons: limited cell phone service (I really needed to disconnect), natural beauty, and not having visited Northern Michigan in 10 or so years. I literally could not have chosen a better location to go M.I.A.
Traverse City is about 4 hours from Detroit so by the time I left work Friday, I arrived pretty late in evening so I couldn't do much. I decided to go the Airbnb route for this trip, especially since it was so last minute, and I'm glad I did because even though everything was closed, the place I had chosen was off a lake, very quiet, had a deck with a spectacular view of the sky. Both nights I was there, I grabbed some blankets (it was April, so it was still quite cold outside), laid on the deck, and just observed the beautiful night sky. Being in the city, I don't see very many stars so this was absolutely amazing! The sky appeared to be an actual window into space itself! The stars lit up the sky like cell phones do in a stadium. Currently, I do not have a lens strong enough to capture the night time sky but this photo by George Hodan is almost identical to what I saw that
night.
The next day, I decided to I started off just wandering in the adorable downtown area. There are so many shops and restaurants and art galleries, it would have taken me a solid two full days or more to go through them all. I visited Poppycocks first, a delicious restaurant with art lined up against the walls.
I tried a tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich and who
knew tomato soup could taste so different from the rest! Not 100% sure of what they put in it, but it must have been crack. Just kidding, probably not, but it was yummy nevertheless.
After Poppycocks, I wandered intothree or four different art galleries. Each wasunique and filled with local and international artists. one of my favorites was Michigan Artists Gallery. On the day I walked in, 40+ local Michigan artists had submitted pieces that were their own renditions of Pablo Picaso's Woman with Green Hat. It was so lovely to see so many various interpretations of Picasso's piece! I wasn't sure if I could take pictures, so I didn't, but here is the inspiration provided by Picasso. Try to make your own work of art based off of the famous artist's painting!
From the gallery, I headed to Cherry Republic, a winery/general store/restaurant. Being that Traverse City is known as the Cherry Capital of the World, all of Cherry Republic's wines are cherry based. If you are of age, you have the opportunity to sample 4 or 5 wines for free or the entire menu with a complimentary glass for $7. If you are not of age, you can sample the Cherry pops (or soda if you know it by that weird name). I personally tried the entire menu and to say I was impressed is a drastic understatement.Note: If you live in Michigan and love wine and wine touring and wine tasting, Northern Michigan is definitely the place to go (Grand Haven, Traverse City, Suttons Bay, etc.). Thankfully, Up North has the perfect climate for producing some of the tastiest wine around!
Once my tummy was filled with some delicious wines, my feet brought me over to a cute little European restaurant called Amical. Though a little pricey, the food was absolutely amazing! I ordered their Tomato Soup en Route (yes, more tomato soup) and once again, this tasted so different than any other tomato soup, including the one I had at Poppycocks. This soup also had a puff pastry on the top which added to the
deliciousness. Though the soup was quite fulfilling, I also got the
Chicken Pot Pie which was also scrumdidiliomptous! You must try both of these items if you ever visit. Also, try other foods and let me know how they are so I can try those too.
My final stop of the day was Sleeping Bear Dunes off of Lake Michigan. Typically, you have to pay $15 to enter but since it was the weekend of Earth Day, all the national parks were free! On top of that, there were only a few people there since it was off season, as it is the busiest during the hotter months and during mid- to late-fall.
When I arrived, I saw that people were going up the dunes without shoes so I decided to do the same. Thankfully, it was only 60 degrees as there would be no way I could climb barefooted on hot sand. I only planned on going up and down the first hill I saw, but the further I climbed, the more beautiful the view became. Long story short, I ended up hiking for about 3 hours, something I had never done before. I was exhausted, but my work did not come without reward. By the time I had found the shore of Lake Michigan, the sun was beginning to set. I had never had the opportunity to watch the sunset before this trip, so I found a cozy spot on the shore and stared off into the horizon. There are no words to describe how beautiful the sight and even the pictures I took don't bring it justice. I'm not even a crier, but I was on the verge of tears the entire time the sun was setting. It was absolutely breathtaking.
After the sunset, I headed back to my place of lodging, got my blankets yet again, and decided to look at the stars one last time. I reflected on the extraordinary experience I had on this trip and how even though I was disconnected from phone calls, texts, and social media, not once did I feel alone. Actually, I felt even more alive. The disconnect allowed me to reconnect with myself and become rejuvenated me to handle whatever life would bring to me next. Don't get me wrong, I love traveling with friends but every now and again, a solo trip can be just what you need for deeper discovery of self and the new environments around you.
Travel has made me more aware of me. I learn more about myself while on the road than anywhere else. It's given me the I can make it happen attitude. - Jessica Johnson
